Miami-Dade County has announced plans to formally suspend mask mandates in all of its schools. Superintendent of School Alberto Carvalho is citing low COVID-19 infection rates as the primary reason for the decision. “On the basis of current health conditions, which are dramatically improved, effective tomorrow parents can access the parent opt-out form from any elementary or K-8 school in Miami-Dade,” Carvalho said at a press conference. Children who are recorded on the opt-out form can stop wearing masks by Friday....

Jack Petocz, who attends Flagler Palm Coast High School, promoted a statewide walkout against the Parental Rights in Education legislation, which would ban the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in certain grades at Florida schools. After leading the walkout at his own school on Thursday, Petocz distributed around 200 pride flags for a rally. The teenager told The Daytona Beach News-Journal that he had been advised not to hand out the flags by the school’s principal, Greg Schwartz....

A police officer raised the alarm when he saw the 44-year-old educator at Shanks Middle School behaving erratically at a Burger King restaurant on West Jefferson Street in Quincy, Florida, WCTV reported. He was then taken by ambulance to Capital Regional Medical Center where he started to act even more unpredictably, emptying his duffel bag, throwing water around and crawling on the floor. Gadsden County deputies called to the hospital examined his personal effects which included a sunglasses case with two torch lighters, a rubber ring, a small bag with about 25 Xanax pills and a crushed pill....

Bailey Braun, 15, was taken to hospital on Sunday afternoon after being hit by the bullet, which went through her ankle and came out of her heel, according to ABC Local 10 News. The local news outlet reported the accidental shooting took place by a bus stop outside the Hollywood Police Department as the driver was picking up more riders. Uber said it had removed the driver from its ride-hailing service and was “working with law enforcement,” but police told Local 10 News that the driver was not being charged as the shooting was accidental and he had a permit for the weapon....

Jasmine Martinez received the $15,000 loan to help keep her beauty salon afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Miami Herald reported. Authorities have accused her of using the funds to hire Javon Carter, an ex-con, to shoot Le’Shonte Jones, the TSA agent at Miami International Airport, as she was walking to her apartment. Jones was shot to death last May. Detectives with the Miami-Dade Police Department said Martinez used at least $10,000 from the loan to pay Carter, as she withdrew that amount a few days before the killing, according to the Miami Herald....

According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), Stephania Lynn Laswell struck an unnamed child with a belt, leaving bruising that was still visible on the child’s thighs two days later. The victim, whose age has not been made public, told police she was struck six times. Laswell doesn’t deny striking the child, but claimed it was because they misbehaved and refused to come out of a room when asked....

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported that officers responded to a situation at a Motel 6 at around noon on Monday, December 14. Motel staff called the police after a woman—Allison Murphy, 35—allegedly attacked one of the maids and then stood over the railing and threatened to jump off. The police report said that after deputies arrived on the scene, they knocked several times on the door of the room where Murphy was staying, before she rushed out with a German shepherd on a leash....

BoxingScene.com reports that Mayweather and Pacquiao have already taken two random drug tests that were conducted by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Mayweather was given a test at his home and at his gym, the Mayweather Boxing Club. Pacquiao is believed to have been tested at Pan Pacific Park and at Wild Card Boxing Club, which is where he trains. Last week, it was announced that USADA would be conducting the tests for the fight....
